What is ABN (Australian Business Number)?

An ABN is a unique 11-digit identifier issued by the Australian Business Register to businesses and organisations operating in Australia.

The Australian Business Number is your business's primary identifier for dealings with other businesses, the ATO and government agencies. Registering for an ABN is free and is required before you can register for GST, claim fuel tax credits or interact with the ATO business portal. Your ABN must be quoted on all invoices, purchase orders and business correspondence. If a supplier does not quote an ABN on their invoice, you may be required to withhold 47% of the payment amount and remit it to the ATO (no ABN withholding). An ABN is also required to operate a business bank account and to access many government grants and programs. While having an ABN does not automatically mean you are registered for GST (that is a separate registration), it is the first step. SortBooks tracks ABN references on supplier invoices in Xero and can flag invoices without valid ABNs that may require withholding.
